What it costs to paint the ceilings of a whole house

Most painting guides quote you a per-room or per-square-metre figure and leave it there. Here is something more useful — an actual itemised quote from a Newcastle painter, dated February 2026, for one clearly defined job.

The specification matters as much as the number: one coat of stain-blocking primer, then two coats of acrylic ceiling flat. Two things are worth pulling out of that. First, labour is 72% of the bill. Paint is cheap; the person applying it is not, and anyone quoting you a price based mainly on how much paint a room needs has the equation backwards. Second, this is ceilings only — no walls, no trims, no doors. It's a useful benchmark precisely because the scope is unambiguous.
That first coat of stain-blocking primer isn't padding.
